Alejandro Betancourt Lopez: business career as an economist

Alejandro Betancourt Lopez started his business career as an economist. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University. He worked as a researcher at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington DC and was an Assistant Professor of Economics at Columbia University. He is also a businessman in the energy industry and has been named to the Board of Directors of the Inter-American Development Bank and the Energy Sector. In October 2016, Alejandro Betancourt Lopez was nominated by President Enrique Peña Nieto as a member of the board of directors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). He is also a member of the board of directors in several other organizations, including Grupo de Administration de Empresas Inmobiliarias (GAEI), Grupo Mexico S.A., and Energía Pública Mexicana S.A.

 Alejandro Betancourt Lopez has been named to the Board of Directors for the IDB for four years starting in January 2017 and will assume his seat on February 1, 2017. Betancourt Lopez Consulting is a company that offers services to private-sector companies and the public sector. The company also develops and implements projects in the energy and engineering sectors. Betancourt Lopez Consulting helps companies in Mexico and Latin America build their businesses, improve their competitiveness, achieve greater efficiency, reduce costs, and increase profitability. The firm provides strategic advice on projects of various types: acquisition of new assets; development of existing assets; modernization or refurbishment of existing structures; control and optimization of processes; creation of new products or services; creation or improvement of operations for the supply chain management (SCM); training programs for employees.

Alejandro Betancourt Lopez generally favors free trade and has supported the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). He has also supported the implementation of the Energy Security Law. He has participated in several forums to discuss energy and financial issues, such as the Gas Industry Forum, organized by Pemex in 2013. Betancourt Lopez is married to Ana Laura Cervantes, who he met while both were students at Yale University.
